Life in Our Area – The Pace of Life We Prefer, and Close to Tons of Fun!
  • An incredibly satisfying mix of a relaxed country lifestyle with good neighbors, and low cost of living that is lost in many places but without sacrifice to progressiveness, is waiting for you in Monroe County. Modern amenities are close enough to easily access and enjoy while you spend your career with Gilmore Memorial – a hospital that is growing with its service area. Relax. Your search is over!

A lot is happening in Monroe County and the city of Amory – more than $1 Billion in industrial and economic growth is arriving from 12 different companies and diverse industries. We're extremely fortunate to have the Gilmore Foundation (upper right photo) bestowing upon our area so many things for us and our children – such as AmoryNet (the city of Amory is Wi-Fi) and free tuition at ICC for anyone who wants to go to college. In many ways the Gilmore Foundation has positively influenced our citizens. In this recruitment website you have met our local and regional leaders, educators, physicians, and your future neighbors, who are steering us to an even brighter future.

In this section we would like to show you how we live. With a great deal to do in Monroe County and Northeast Mississippi, we have so much to draw from – from owning your own plane and storing it at a hanger in a local FBO county airport or if you want quick access to a modern regional airport terminal for weekend getaways, we offer both. Do you enjoy the symphony, art shows, or theater? They are here, too. Recreational boating, golf, hunting, and camping are unlimited. Modern mall shopping and their retailers or places such as Home Depot for a run for weekend chores, are close by. Want to attend a college football game? We’re in "SEC country"  -–  that's the best football there is!

Amory is a "country town close to just about everything." Make no mistake about our being a rural community. There are a lot of open spaces here. Large agricultural fields surround Amory and the small communities which dot our county. When we drive through the county we enjoy seeing open fields and this kind of landscape until we get to our destinations. While many drive in bumper-to-bumper traffic to get to the mall or to see a show, our lives are about light traffic and short lines wherever we go. Free parking is everywhere.

  • Life is simpler here – you might say it is still unspoiled by commercialism. But virtually everything we need is here . Of course, the Internet has influenced how we shop, but premier shopping in an urban setting, or a major International Airport, are closer than you think. In fact, we live in between Memphis and Birmingham and it takes only about 2 hours to get to them.

Entertainment & Culture

The best acts in music and entertainment come to our area to the 10,000 seat Bancorp South Center and our Tupelo Symphony boasts the best musicians in our region for more than 40 years. Here you will meet directors of our Arts and we’ll show you where you can catch the latest Hollywood blockbuster.

Recreation & Leisure

Water skiing and fishing on the Tombigbee, our golf club is premier, our state parks offer superior camping facilities, and if you want to get in a good work-out after a long day, our facilities on campus are as good as anywhere and include an indoor pool. Here our Chamber Director talks about recreation he enjoys and our local golf pro will give you a lesson!

Shopping & Food

Although the Internet allows you to buy almost anything and get it delivered to your door step, access to quality, name-brand shopping is important. Our local shopping is adequate for immediate essentials and includes a Super Wal-mart, and 31 miles from Amory is the massive Mall at Barnes Crossing and a large variety of big-box retailers. Don’t rule out a day trip to Memphis or Birmingham for premier shopping of any kind. And if you want "stick to your ribs" country cooking, you’ll never need to leave Monroe County. Allow us to introduce you to shopping and eateries of all kinds in our area, and meet local restaurant folks who would love to spoil you!

Kids & Family

Although schools and churches in our area are renowned for keeping the calendars for our children full, there’s an unlimited amount of healthy fun to have here. We are also a safe place for kids to play with virtually no crime. We believe we are one of the best smaller communities for children in America. A zookeeper, a director of recreation, and a "Cheer-nastics" instructor can’t wait to meet you and your family!

Tupelo Regional Airport

Airport Director Terry Anderson gives a tour of the $6 million 22,000 SF terminal renovated in 2007, which already hosts one commercial airline and is preparing for one or two more. By 2009 the runway will be widened to 150 feet and lengthened to 8,000 feet, which will allow for regular 727 flights. After they established its 8th plant in the US in our region the Toyota executives wanted to have the convenience of flying into and out of NW Mississippi, and our airport responded!

Festivals

Our own Amory Railroad Festival celebrated its 30th year in 2008. Mississippi is a state that can keep a festivalgoer busy almost all year long! We took the time to put together a list of festivals throughout our region to give you an idea of how much fun you can have in our backyard and our part of this world.

A great life can also be simplerand without sacrificing modern amenities!

Our Real Estate offers lakeside homes, and the silos on Riverbirch Golf Club

When you go to Bills, remember to order "with or without," and that's fried catfish with slaw, a potato
and sweet tea at Pickle's Drive In – we'll see you there!

Unless otherwise noted, all photos in our presentation are original and taken especially for this presentation during a one week onsite production visit! Thanks to so many friends and neighbors who took time from their days after we asked them to participate in our recruitment website for you and your family.
